Fluid art or pour painting is a form of abstract art. Acrylic paint or pigment is mixed with a pouring medium to different consistencies to achieve different aesthetic results. The paint is then poured onto the canvas using a variety of techniques and then manipulated to create an attractive composition.
My favorite techniques are ring pours, marbling, and blooms.
Fluid art entered my life when I watched YouTube and Instagram videos to relax. My family bought me a starter kit and encouraged me to “stop watching videos and go put paint on the canvas.” I was hooked since my first ring pour painting. Fluid art is an activity that calms me. My practice has taught me that I can’t control everything, especially a liquid form of art. Creating something beautiful that is relaxing and helps me to let go is a double win.
While creating pieces of fluid art, there is always paint that runs off the painting. Many times I was so sad to get rid of the beautiful patterns that were left behind. Through research I learned that through using a silicone mat I could later use these paint skins to make jewelry. I love creating beautiful wearable art from the paint that pours off my paintings. I try to use sustainable practices by using reusable mats and materials.
